Here's a nice story about Rolf Benirschke. Benirschke was a placekicker for the professional football team the San Diego Chargers. He had a great career playing for 10 years and setting all kinds of records. The really astounding part is that he played all those years while fighting ulcerative colitis. The last 7 years of his career he played after having ostomy surgery.
Benirschke has made a difference in many people's lives with the founding of the Great Comebacks Awards Program, which tells the success stories of people with Crohn's disease, colitis, colon cancer or who have had an ostomy surgery (see his Web site at www.greatcomebacks.com).
As a result of all his hard work President H.W. Bush sought him out when the president's son Marvin Bush (the current president's brother) underwent surgery for ulcerative colitis.
"I told Marvin you'll be able to do everything you (did) before the surgery," Benirschke said. Now Marvin is involved in the Great Comebacks project. "We want people to realize they don't have to compromise their lifestyle," Benirschke said.
